I was raised by my grandmother. She was disabled and could not work, so money was tight. All of my clothes were either hand-me-downs from friends and relatives or clothes that Grandma sewed/repurposed for me. We would go to thrift stores and Grandma would go through the clothing racks. She did not look at sizes, she looked at fabrics. She picked out the items with the most beautiful fabrics: velvets, satins, chiffons, etc. She would take those pieces home and take them apart completely—down to each hook, eye, and seam binding. Then, she would use the materials to sew beautiful clothing for me. To this day, one of my very favorite things is to rifle through the racks at a thrift store/yard sale/garage sale.
