So you’ve got some coconut oil on hand? Lucky you! Go pop some plain popcorn (in that 1970’s air-popper or in a brown bag in your microwave). Melt together equal parts butter and coconut oil. Or skip the butter, if you’d prefer. Drizzle over hot popcorn and salt to taste. Mmmm… tropical popcorn! Fountain Hills, AZ |

Oooh, I love oatmeal, milk, mayonnaise, and tad of honey for my face. It’s awesome on dry skin. For my chest and shoulders, though – egg whites, oatmeal, yogurt, and unflavored milk of magnesia. Green tea or lemon juice for toner. Interlachen, Florida |

I’m a big fan of avocado oil. I add it to my conditioner and it makes my hair really smooth and shiny. “I want it to gleam!” I also add a little baking soda to my shampoo occasionally- it really pulls out whatever you’ve got rockin’ in your locks (perfect for when say, your co-worker douses you with yogurt). P.S. You can definitely cook with coconut oil and it’s awesome! Gives whatever you’e cooking that little bit of coconuttyness. That’s right, coconuttyness. SANTA MONICA, CA |

I found a great recipe that takes one part of olive oil, honey, and an egg…blend all together and throw on your entire head. Leave it on for at least a half hour, with a shower cap, and use your blow dryer to heat it every few minutes. Rinse it out with cool water (do not use hot water because it will bake the egg onto your hair) and your hair will feel extremely soft. It is supposed to be a great alternative for conditioning heat treatments. Never use the V05 treatments or any of that garbage…they add chemicals in it that actually damage the hair with continued use. TURLOCK, CA |

Organic coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil & Crisco (yes Crisco) all make wonderful moisturizers. Crisco makes a wonderful body butter. I don’t buy toners anymore. I mix distilled water with Braggs apple cider vinegar & use that. Baking soda is great for a lot of things. It exfoliates the skin (face & body), whitens teeth & is awesome for laundry. Anyone find a really good organic shampoo with no sulfites (sp)??? |

Btw, how do you microwave regular popcorn in a brown paper bag Julie? We have a flat ceramic cook top & I’ve always been too afraid to make popcorn the “old fashioned” way on it in fear of scratching it. |

Wow lots of info here! I’ve definitely heard of the egg thing. I’ve tried mayonnaise… I couldn’t get the smell out. =/ Anyway, I used to buy my cosmetics from Target, brands like Cover Girl or whatever but after learning more about corporations, etc and all the corners they cut, I’m trying to switch to better products that are made with organic ingredients. I’m not sure if you guys are aware of this website where you can check how safe your make-up is. They use chemicals in the U.S. that are illegal in the E.U… I’m not surprised. If you’re really into beauty and corporations’ impact on our society, you could also check out the documentary “America the Beautiful.” Can anyone recommend any good make-up brands? Long Beach, CA |
