Hey Y’all! Friendly environmentalist to help you save some green by going a little green this fall & winter! -Now’s the time to insulate your windows! The adhesive will stick better than trying to apply it to a very cold frame. The kits are pretty cheap at Home Depot compared to how much you’ll save. -You guys know about power strips. They do save a lot. I use one for my computer mess and one for my tv/cable box mess. Many cable boxes suck up more energy than desktops, even when in sleep mode! -Change or clean your heater’s filter and check freon levels. Yep, even in winter a heat pump uses freon. When they get low on freon, they tend to run on emergency heat more, costing a ton more money. -While you’re in the dark & scary basement, try to insulate the heat pump, visible ducts and you water heater. Keep that warm air going to the rest of your house instead of leaking into the basement. -Have a leaf blower? Clean out your dryer duct by removing the outside vent (should simply screw on), detach the vent hose from the dryer and give it a good blast of air with the leaf blower. Blow all the extra fuzz outside (don’t worry, the birds like it). Replace the vent & hose. Installing a piece of screen to your vent will prevent critters and bugs from coming in looking for a nice warm place to live for the winter. I’ll have more later! Germantown, MD |

We’re cleaning out vents that were installed in our house in the early 70’s(our house goes back to the 1800s, and did not used to have vents), and we have not been able to light out propane tank yet. I saw those little space heaters @ walmart for like $30…are those bad to use, or dangerous? Just thought I would see if you could help me, I’ve heard things both ways on those things… Blanco, TX |

Actually, the ceramic heaters at Target are your best bet. They’ll heat the fastest & warmest, while using less energy overall than the standard cheaper heater. Space heaters work well if your heating only a room or two, but they’re not ideal for a whole house situation. They’re pretty safe too. Just avoid the SUPER cheap ones (which is why I recommended Target over Walmart), don’t put them near curtains, and don’t cover them. Also, treat them like appliances, meaning, don’t plug them into extension cords! Germantown, MD |

Thanks for the tip :-) Do you know how much the ones @ Target are? And do the one’s you’re speaking of heat more than 1 or 2 rooms? Right now we use about a half of the house, the kitchem, living space, bedroom, and 2 of the bathrooms. The rest of the house, other bedrooms, etc, we keep locked with things in storage so there is no reason to heat them up :-P Blanco, TX |

The one-2 room ones are 15-20. If you need more than that, the old oil filled ones are still useful. They’re about 50 and heat up nice & toasty. Germantown, MD |

Which one is safer? And can you let them stay on when you’re asleep? I dont want our house going up in flames haha :bomb: :bomb: :bomb: :bomb: Blanco, TX |

Except for some of the real cheap no-name brands, they’re all pretty safe these days. Most fires result from people using them irresponsibly. You can use both ceramic & oil filled while you sleep. Models that have built in thermostats will help control temperature while you sleep, and turn down or off once a set temp has been reached I know way too much about home energy! Germantown, MD |

Which is good for me! haha =] Thanks for helping. And I know it’s random, but you know what I foudn at HEB the other day? I found some Cinnamon sticks, the ones you hang above the fire place, etc, and they’re $5! They smell heavenly! Blanco, TX |
