This practise was picked up and continued by successive civilizations. The Greeks and Romans, for example, adopted the fourth-finger rule, believing (as did the Egyptians before them) that the left-hand ring finger housed a specific vein that led directly to the heart. The Romans called this vein the Vena Amoris (meaning Vein of Love). Despite the fact that we now have a far better understanding of how the human circulatory system works, the sentiment hasn’t altered. After all, the heart-to-heart connection is far too romantic to give up.
