Hey everyone. I’m moving 7 hours away to go to college at Northern Michigan. The school just really fits my personality in that they are very into nature and being green. I was wondering if there are any past or present college students on here that have any tips for being green even if you’re a college student. |

One of the biggest things I remember seeing people do was constantly use disposable plates/cups/utensils/etc because they could just throw them away when they got done. it might take a few extra minutes, but bring your own plates and whatnot with you. Also don’t overfill the washing machines. Some people do that to save money and claim to save water and soap, but half the time they had to wash everything at least twice to get it clean. Also carry a reusable water bottle with you. Jefferson, Georgia |

The (maybe) great thing about my college is that they have a meal plan for freshmen that allows them to eat as many times in the day as they want (not so good if you’re avoiding the freshman 15), and the only thing disposable they use are the napkins, so everything else gets washed! I’m not planning on making meals in my room, just getting granola bars and snacks… and the washing machines are free to use on campus! The water bottle thing is great advice! Thanks! |

Congrats on going to school! I hope you love it :) Laundry – when you’re just one person, it’s hard to gather up enough to fill one load without living dangerously and mixing colors, and running extra loads will waste water and electricity for the dryer (but like Kristen said, don’t overfill your machines, that’s just as bad). Buddy up with some friends you can trust not to steal your stuff, and all wash your sheets/socks/same color clothes together. Plus, then you don’t have to do laundry alone! Manchester, New Hampshire |
